The Market Operations Engineer role involves providing engineering support for the wholesale electricity market, monitoring system conditions, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure market stability and performance.
Responsibilities
- Executes the Day-Ahead Market daily, and validates the inputs and results
- Works shifts for Day-Ahead Market operations desk, which operate 10 hours a day on a rotation that includes some holidays and weekends
- Assists in monitoring and analyzing the ERCOT wholesale market
- Assists in the creation of network models of the ERCOT system for the Day-Ahead Market
- Acquires the skill and knowledge of ERCOT procedures and business functions related to the Day Ahead Market program and other ERCOT operations
- Develops understanding and knowledge of competitive energy markets and trends
- Develops and maintains knowledge of the wholesale market and ERCOT grid operations in order to support Market Participant business needs
- Acquires the skills and knowledge to begin to anticipate and resolve issues within the ERCOT wholesale market and grid operations using power engineering knowledge
- Generates and maintains market reports per requests and protocols
- Assists the management team and senior experts in providing technical assistance to PUCT, industry and Stakeholder groups
- With guidance from senior team members and/or management, assists in addressing Market Participant questions pertaining to the daily market and grid operations activities
- Escalates issues to the Supervisor and/or Manager in a timely manner when necessary
- Develops strong working relationships with other internal departments
- Executes the Day-Ahead Market daily, and validates the inputs and results

- Assists in the creation of network models of the ERCOT system for the Day-Ahead Market
- Tests and validates changes to the applications used by the team to execute the market
- Monitors and analyzes the ERCOT wholesale market and recommends design/system modifications and enhancements as needed
- Develops and maintains extensive knowledge of the wholesale market and ERCOT grid operations in order to support Market Participant business needs
- Anticipates and resolves issues within the ERCOT wholesale market and grid operations using power engineering knowledge and experience
- Generates and maintains market reports per requests and protocols
- Proposes and creates new solutions for data acquisition and reporting
- Assists the management team and senior experts in providing technical assistance to PUCT, industry and Stakeholder groups
- Uses judgment and provides remedies for Market Participants disputes within the ERCOT market
- Addresses Market Participant questions pertaining to the daily market and grid operations activities
- Works independently and escalates issues to the Supervisor and/or Manager in a timely manner when necessary
- Develops strong working relationships with other internal departments
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, or a combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with knowledge equivalent to a major in such fields
- Engineer 2 – Minimum 1 to 2 years (in excess of degree requirements stated above) of progressively responsible experience as a power system engineer or similar type role. Experience within the electric utility industry preferred
- Engineer 3 - Minimum 3 years (in excess of degree requirements stated above) of progressively responsible experience as a power system engineer or similar type role. Experience within the electric utility industry preferred
