Key Responsibilities: Coaching, Mentoring, and Supporting Student Success
As a City Year AmeriCorps member and Academic Tutor & Mentor, your role will be multifaceted, focusing on both individual student support and whole school initiatives. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Coaching and Mentoring Students:
- Working with identified students 1:1 and in small groups to develop literacy and/or math skills through varied learning activities
- Creating and implementing a behavior management system to foster a positive learning environment
- Developing social-emotional skills through proven strategies of learning, practicing, reflection, and repetition
- Collaborating with teachers and team members to collect, record, analyze, and monitor individual student progress
- Supporting Whole School Initiatives:
- Participating in extended day and virtual programming for students, including academic enrichment, homework support, and recreational activities
- Co-leading events or programs that recognize and appreciate student growth and achievement in math, literacy, attendance, and behavior
- Engaging students, parents/guardians, and community members in education or social issues through themed events
- Creating an Engaging Learning Environment:
- Collaborating with teachers to create a safe, healthy, and engaging classroom space
Essential and Preferred Qualifications
While prior experience in all these tasks is not necessary, we do require:
- Eligibility Requirements:
- Being a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
- Having a GED or high school diploma, some college experience, or a college degree
- Having served no more than three terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program
- Agreeing to complete a background check
- Preferred Skills and Competencies:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with diverse student populations and communities
- Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic educational environment
