Job Summary
As an Education Assistant for Inclusion, you will work under the immediate supervision of certified teaching staff, subject specialists, or our Program Director to assist in the structured education of students with special needs within a regular classroom setting. Your primary responsibility will be to provide individualized support to students, modifying lessons and instructional materials to ensure accessibility and comprehension. You will also work with small groups of students, maintain behavior reinforcement programs, and provide physical support and assistance to ensure students' safety and well-being.
Key Responsibilities
- Work individually with students with special needs to support their educational progress and established Individual Education Program (IEP)
- Modify lessons, instructional materials, quizzes, and tests for student accessibility and comprehension
- Conduct parallel teaching/tutoring and take notes for students as needed
- Maintain behavior reinforcement programs for positive and negative behavior
- Provide physical support and assistance to ensure students' safety and well-being, including feeding, lifting, positioning, and toileting
- Assist with range of motion exercises, physical/occupational therapy programs, and physical education
- Develop and implement strategies to support students' fine and gross motor skills, balance, and interpreting directions
- Assist with speech therapy and communicate with students using various methods, such as assistive software, sign language, Braille, and typing/writing
- Monitor and document student activities and progress for teacher and parental review
- Attend consultations with specialists to meet the needs of special needs children and interact with children to encourage positive self-concept and enthusiasm for the discovery process
Essential Qualifications
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications:
- Associate's degree preferred, with a minimum of six months of experience working with special needs children
- Knowledge of curriculum content for assigned area and/or student's Individual Education Program
- Knowledge of universal precautions required when exposed to blood, mucus, saliva, urine, and bowel movements
- Knowledge of proper emergency medical care, body positioning/mechanics, and CPR
- Ability to safely lift, move, and work with special needs students
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, administrators, students, and parents
Preferred Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- Experience working in an inclusive educational setting
- Knowledge of available methods to modify classroom assignments and adapt instructional materials
- Skill in using specialized tools, such as adaptive computer software, adaptive therapy equipment, and augmentative communication devices
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Level I - IV Fingerprint Clearance card through the Arizona Department of Public Safety
