What You’ll Do
The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) – Behavioral Health is responsible for accurately abstracting, analyzing, and coding mental health and substance‑use–related clinical documentation using ICD‑10, CPT, and HCPCS coding standards. This role ensures compliant, timely, and optimized reimbursement within a behavioral health setting, supporting organizational financial integrity and regulatory adherence.
Coders in behavioral health require enhanced knowledge of psychotherapy codes, evaluation and management guidelines as they apply in behavioral health, and payer documentation expectations.
JOB RESPONSIBITIES
• Review behavioral health clinical documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
• Assign ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for behavioral health services (e.g., psychotherapy and psychiatry) in compliance with payer rules.
• Query clinicians for clarification when documentation is incomplete or ambiguous.
• Ensure coding that supports medical necessity, meets payer-specific guidelines, and mitigates compliance risk.
• Collaborate with billing teams to resolve denials, coding-related rejections, or audit findings.
• Provide feedback to clinical staff on documentation improvement opportunities.
• Maintain current knowledge of behavioral health coding guidelines, payer policies, and regulatory changes.
• Perform internal audits and quality assurance processes and provide monthly analytical reporting.
• Protect patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA requirements.

Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• 1 year of behavioral health or relevant teaching experience.
This position requires valid U.S. work authorization. The company does not provide visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Requirements:
• Current AAPC CPC credential required.
• Minimum 2–3 years of coding experience, preferably within behavioral or mental health.
• Strong knowledge of psychotherapy, psychiatry, and SUD‑related coding guidelines.
• Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and behavioral health clinical workflows.
• Proficient with EHR and billing systems; strong computer and data entry skills.
• High accuracy, precision, and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
