Under the direction of the cafeteria site supervisor, the cafeteria assistants primary function is to prepare and serve appealing, nutritious and balanced meals to the students, faculty and staff of the school district. In many instances, the cafeteria assistant provides the first point of contact to the school district customer. S/he should approach each contact with a friendly, service-oriented disposition. A positive attitude and teamwork are essential to the success of food services. While generalized duties are sometimes assigned, it is essential for the cafeteria assistant to maintain flexibility and the willingness to take the initiative and pitch-in wherever needed.GENERAL FUNCTIONSParticipates in the preparation of components of daily mealsParticipates in the service of daily meals to the schools communityCleans and disinfects pots, pans, utensils and workstations at the end of every work dayCleans and disinfects table tops in the dining areas on a daily basisAdvises and communicates with the cafeteria manager any comments, concerns, criticisms, thoughts or ideas that will lead to the improvement of food service operations at the site or district levelCommunicates effectively with all food service staff, central office and district staffReports any emergencies or problems immediately to the cafeteria manager
